Commercial handoffs

What belongs in a commercial handoff

A forwarded message is not always enough. Make the owner, information and next action explicit.

Research notes and sketches arranged on a table

When a request moves from a seller to a specialist, both sides need a shared understanding of what is being handed over. A simple routine can make that transfer easier to follow.

Name the current owner

Distinguish between sending a request and having it accepted. Agree who remains responsible while the next person or team is being assigned.

Include the information needed next

Record the customer's question, relevant context, missing information and requested timing. Keep a requested date separate from a confirmed commitment.

Agree what happens when the handoff is blocked

Define the next action, who will resolve the missing information and when the team should review the request again. Keep a manual fallback available if the shared tool is unavailable.

The useful question is not only “Was it forwarded?” It is “Who has accepted the next action?”
